Lost Ransom

In the night they placed you
on a bundled ark of reeds,
beneath a boasting sail,
to be stolen by the breeze.
You were sent as ransom.
Did you blink?
What heaven did you see?
His eyelids cold against your back,
and weather on the beam–
he tried your balance in the black.
Were you his aperture for
stars to link?
And did this fallen hero,
held beneath your golden glow,
conceive your gaze was struck
by the straight, obdurate blow
of a smith, as he watched
the sun sink?
