As a species, we make peculiar mistakes in how we perceive the world and ourselves. In many ways, these mistakes are hard-wired. It would be cheap to derisively denounce them as evolutionary flaws in need of repair or excision. These cognitive quirks and limitations are what define us as humans. As Leonard Cohen wrote, “There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in.”
